Ruby Sparks

In life, we imagine how that perfect someone will walk into our life. We picture the movie-inspired scenarios, or those Nicholas Sparks’ novels. Sparks, Ruby Sparks. The movie I decided to spend my winter solstice. Snacking on mixed trail and Tim tam’s while sipping the perfectly brewed hot Hazelnut Milo I made just before I put the movie on. I believed it was a biography, or about a person, a one that occupied reality at one stage.

Funny how I thought it was about a real-existing person. She was perfect for him. What he had in mind, and in every detail. The girl in the sunny haze in a dream he once had. Then out of nowhere, she existed. He might have mixed up reality, and his imaginations; whatever it could be, there she was. Just how he pictured her to be, sharing the same detail of the life he wanted her to hold.  It was good. I have to admit that I am being in the same boat with Calvin. How I wish that that special one will turn out what I exactly want them to be. However, I beg to differ having a non-logical explanation of how they suddenly came into my life. They have to have a proper entry in my life though, not just rock up from a concocted memory, or from a dating site or something like that. The sad bit about love (or whatever we should call that fantasy) is we make a puppet out of our illusion.

By the poolside in one of the most striking dialogue in the film, “So that’s what you’re looking for in a guy... douchiness?...” I dunno, maybe I guess I was looking for you... Just took me a while to find you.” She jumps in the pool, the he follows. She asks, “What did you think the first time you saw me?” “I thought you were the most beautiful girl I ever saw.” “Were you disappointed when you got to know me?”  “How can you ask that?” “I’m such a mess.” “I love your mess.” “...The first time I saw you, I thought, ‘look at that boy, I love him, forever, and ever and ever.’” “What if you get sick of me?” “I won’t... I promise.” Then everything comes to a reality, or what if it actually happened and he was just logging everything?

Travelling Light

"Sometimes the only way to find yourself is to get a little lost."

Travelling Light, it's about this free-spirited girl who went for photography and travelling. I can 98% relate to this movie. It's so amazing, I'll tell you more about it on my end-of-month title reviews! The setting was also Adelaide! How cool is that?

And yes, that's me when I was a toddler, and I wasn't dumping. You can see that I have my tiny pants on and that I'm just posing for this. I don't remember this photo, but I'm pretty sure no one could smile like that while their doing their stressful business! ;D

Silent Terror

I never thought I was going to click this video and actually keep watching 'til the end. This 10-minute clip shows a film with no dialogue, however, the cinematography makes you want to stay. I recognise the lead actor in this video, he's from a comedy sitcom in the 90's. It's odd how I see him as he portrayed this creepy, psychotic lonely man.

I like the fact that Filipino videos are always made to look as it was stuck in the past, with the glories of the wooden Filipino-Spanish homes are featured, with the rustic feel of a hacienda in the city-setting and images of saints and elaborated altars are depicted.

It's look grand, but a bit scary for me. (Photo from Philippine Travel Guide)

I am not daring enough to tell people (Western) about the peculiarities of the Filipino culture, specifically about the spiritual realm. For some odd reason, enchanted beings called engkantos, mythical creatures that take in beastly forms and restless ghosts coexist with the citizens of this republic.

I think it may have something to do with the influx of many religions in the past, the pagan practices and the overly strict Catholic rites. I never get how sorrowful and eerie the Catholic churches feel inside it. Seeing life-size statues of saints in their serene faces terrifies me. Especially the ceramic statues simulacrum of a dead Jesus, or the one that is covered with blood and is carrying a cross. As well as the overly dressed Virgin Mary in silk fabric, with gems and stones on it. Old women with black veils covering their grey hair and wrinkled face-- scary sight.
Wtf are you doing, boys? (Photo taken from Google Images)

I think it's a good identity for the Filipinos, being God-fearing and religious; however, I don't think if people still know what they are doing about or it also just became like a pagan practice itself. I don't want to put down any religion or anything, but that's just my opinion.

Furthermore, I am actually convinced about all these supernatural occurrences. I hear them all the time, usually from old people. I don't think they'll still want to try to scare people my age. You can see the honesty from every word uttered. My mum (kinda) grew up in this mystical island called Bohol, and whenever I come to visit, bizarre stories from people who lives there never ends. I thought to myself why they'd never gotten used to it, or why didn't they leave the place.

I guess that's just how the Philippines is really is. They say, it's where the lost Kingdom of Lemuria sits, and I am intrigued about these stories. When I was younger, I remember watching docus with re-enactments of these. They scared the shi-load out of me. I think that's how Filipinos roll, they believe in God faithfully so the evil wants to lure them to their side by distracting them. I also had good stories to tell: like seeing shadow people with smiles, broken radio in a haunted car turning on, tuning in and ends with a diabolic laughter to scare three little children, and all others. Don't worry, I'm not delusional, I have other people to vouch that for me.

Going back, yes! This film is superb. You can actually see the work that has been put on this! The concept is possibly bases from a true story or something (especially that the crime rate in that country is high, plus you get these psycho stories all the time). It had symbolic shots and the technique is truly professional. I am not a critique or what, but just watch it yourself and agree with me.

Happy Halloween World, Good All Saints and Soul's Day Philippines!

The Philippine Islands in the 21st Century: Not Giving In

Titles in September

Here's Robby, you will see him when you go to the State Library to loan DVDs, and yeah, thanks to the Library, I can watch movies for free! In September, these were the movies I've watched, and with my golden pharoahs, you'll know how I liked them.

Saw this film after a month it was released in the Philippines, I never thought I was still going to see this movie. It was over-rated in the Philippines, because the country was featured in it. The true beauty of its society was depicted very well. I sort'a get the plot and all, but what made me like this movie was how they were able to film it in the most populated city of a highly populous country. Hollywood magic!

It's gory and I liked it. It was the first Saw movie I've ever seen, and coincidentally this was the part where they did some revelations and explanations about jigsaw. I just like how gory it was, that's all.

I heard this was a good movie, but I wasn't really impressed. I thought it was kinda draggy. I don't like how their romance started out, it was like abrupt and forced. I don't know, the plot could've been better.

The cover appeared similar to Juno, and it did kind of have a plot with the same. Except it's French, I love French films! It's about a guy just in school, and wanting to get laid— typical teen tragic tale. One thing will annoy you in this movie: they wear the same set of clothes althroughout the movie. They were like characters from a comicbook.

Title is self-explanatory. It's about a man reminiscing his memoirs of his father — in all emotions he had while he was growing up. This film is very moving and makes you truly value the presence of people in your life, especially your father.

Dope plot! I know it's wrong how the Indians are always making fun of their little brother, Pakistan, but this movie turns out really brilliant. It makes sense how desperation of some people from third world countries to go overseas for a better life is a story that happens everyday. They also never run out of good chicaneries to make it happen.

It's a documentary about Jesus Culture in America. No further comment.

Gay, hurrah! Depicting awesome fashion and gay culture of retrospective San Francisco. Based from a true story, you will be moved with what gay people had to go through during the time when most of the people were dumb*sses.

I know this was popular, and is one of the best horror movies of all-time (REALLY?); but I wasn't impressed. I watched it with my flatmate, he was able to finish it off, but I fell asleep. Wow, it was that scary. I felt cheated.

A French film about girls. How they lived their lives and things like that. Oh well, it was just interesting. It was like Sex and the City, but in French(?)

I like stories like these. How everyone's connected, and how everyone has their stories. In just one day, this highly-commercial day, called 'Valentine's Day' all these people have their story, and it all ends well and romantic for everyone (almost)!

It's unrealistic, but hey, it could be real! Modern-day grim reapers, featuring a story of a chick who had an untimely death. She coincidentally contacts again with her family and she was unfortunately the one who had to take away the life of her sister's true love. But it was still ridiculous!

Is it okay to be left handed?

Why should anyone be made to feel like crap for just being themselves? We live in a poisoned world, but we also have the antidote just sitting in our medicine cabinets.

The magic of magic

If I can make a difference, I will. That's why I do this ridiculous waste-of-time.

If I can make someone's horrible day a chance to make it better, I will. If I can make someone smile for 3 minutes, I will. If I can make them believe that life is magical, I will. If I can make them think that there are people out there willing to make time to amaze them, I certainly will.
